Toxic translated from Greek means poisonous. Toxins are harmful substances, which enter the body from the external environment with air, water, food and through the skin.
When a huge amount of toxins gets into your body on a daily basis, and their load exceeds what detoxification organs can cope with, toxins start to accumulate in the body, causing various types of diseases.
You might think what does a seemingly harmless moisturiser, foundation, lipstick or favourite perfume have to do with it?
If you look at the ingredients list of the products sold in the beauty shops, you will understand that the majority of products belong not on your body, face and hair, but in the trash.
All this trash is packaged nicely to convince you to spend your money on products which are harmful to your body! Those attractive packages often cost more than what they hold inside.
To help you navigate in the beauty products ingredients, I have prepared a list of substances to be definitely avoided. These are mostly petrochemical industry by-products, so if you see any of these names in the ingredients list, it’s a good reason to put this product aside and never use it:
⛔️ Petrochemical industry products:
• Mineral oil
• Parafin wax, paraffinum liquidum
• Benzen, toluene
Anything with abbreviations:
– PEG (polyethylene glycol)
– DEA (diethanolamine)
– MEA (ethanolamine)
Any word containing:
– ‘butanol’ or ‘butyl’ (butyl alcohol, butylparaben, butylene glycol, etc.)
– ‘ethanol’ or ‘ethyl’ (ethyl alcohol, ethylene oxide, ethylene dichloride, ethylene-diamine-tetracetatic acid (EDTA), ethylene glycol, etc.)
– ‘methanol’ or ‘methyl’ (methyl alcohol, methylparaben, methylcellulose, etc.)
– ‘propyl’ (isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, propyl alcohol, cocamidopropyl betaine)
Words ending in ‘eth’
ceteareth, laureth, myreth, oleth
‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’
can refer to whole bunch of chemicals that are derived from petroleum
Parabens
propylparaben, methylparaben, butylparaben, benzylparaben
⛔️ Other questionable ingredients in powder products:
Talk, being number one ingredient in many powder products, is the cheapest possible mineral, which forms together with asbest, known for its harmul effect on human body. Talk may be a strong irritant to the skin.
Silicons (usually end in -cone or -siloxane), depending on the origin (natural or synthetic), and the amounts used. When you see it in the end of an ingredient list, it can do no harm to your skin, as in general they let the airpass through for your skin to maintain its basic functions. Usually silicones are more questionable in haircare products, as they tend to accumulate and make hair heavier.
There are more toxins surrounding us, of course, but starting at least noticing and avoiding the worst of them, is already going to make a big difference in how you feel, and how your skin looks!
